At the Drive In

August 6th, 2007 admin

I might be showing my age a bit, but I saw my first movie at a drive in theater last night (This one). It was a good experience; I saw The Bourne Ultimatum and Hairspray. Quite a combination.

The Bourne Ultimatum was very good. A solid ending to the Bourne trilogy. I would have been fine to wait ’til it came out on video, but it was just fine at the drive in.

Hairspray was a musical that didn’t really try to be a movie. Dreamgirls was a movie musical. The acting was good, and the songs typically made sense to the plot. This was purely a musical. The story was fine, but it seemed to be all about setting up the next song. One thing though; we sat outside of our cars and turned up our radios to listen to the movie. This was fine for Bourne Ultimatum, but for a musical, not so much.

More than meets the eye…

Just saw the new Transformers movie. I thought it was pretty cool; video effects and sound made it worth seeing in the theater. In the age of so many franchises ‘modernized’ (read: eviscerated), it was treated rather well*. Sure Bumblebee should have been a Beetle, but ehh; I’m not too worried about it.

For those who complained that this movie was juvenile, that should have been obvious from the outset for two reasons:

  • Directed by Michael Bay
  • Starring giant freakin’ robots.

Complaining that the Transformers movie was too juvenile is like complaining that Black Hawk Down was too violent.
In conclusion: if you haven’t seen this yet, I would recommend it as a pretty solid summer ‘blockbuster’.

* I was never an Transformers superfan - had a couple of toys when I was younger, and enjoyed the cartoon. I wouldn’t be capable of spotting many continuity gaffes between this movie and previous incarnations.

Franchise Movie, part 5

I’m not a huge Harry Potter fan. I haven’t read any of the books, but I have seen all the movies. However, that puts me in the serious minority among my girlfriend and our board game group.

We decided to replace our usual Thursday game night with a showing of the latest movie in the series, The Order of the Pheonix. Opinions varied, but not as much as on some of the previous incarnations. The most positive comment was “It was better the second time through” (he works at the theater, he didn’t pay to see it more than once. Most of us seemed to think that it wasn’t bad, but it seemed more plodding than the previous works. It had its job of continuing the story, which it did, but lacking much of the magic (wonder, not spells) the first two entries had.

The special effects were decent but they weren’t amazing, and they certainly don’t stand up to some of this summers other CG blockbusters (read: Pirates 3, Transformers)
