Beaten To The Punch

Every time I think I’m gonna wake up back in the Crusades. When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I’d wake up and there’d be nothing. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back here.

You know that Apocalypse Now vs. Robin Hood RPG idea I mentioned a few days back? Well, I guess it wasn’t so unique. “All The King’s Men” was completed by GSLamb today. For being a 24 Hour RPG, it looks and reads very well.

A few of the things I really dug:

  • The quotes. The text is laced with the iconic Apocalypse Now quotes reinterpreted to fit twelfth century England. For a movie with a lot of internal dialog, this is a great way to set the mood quickly and efficiently.
  • Diminishing attributes. This looks like an elegant way to model the death, desertion, and insanity you would expect from the source material.
  • The Degrees of Success/Failure system. I like how it is broken down, with discrete ‘levels’ instead of just success and failure.

Most of the issues I have with the game are probably things that would (or will) be cleared up with further development:

  • I want to play a Robin Hood game, not a game set in twelfth century England. I don’t have enough background on England in that time period to make it come alive for me. What other adventures, beyond the Heart of Sherwood would make sense in the context of both Apocalypse Now and the time period?
  • I’m not sure I follow the dice mechanic completely. At one point, the rules say that you are looking for the highest and lowest values rolled, but I don’t see any other point where the lowest roll is referenced. Am I missing it, or is that just a remnant of an earlier version?

This is a strong entry into the competition, and looks to be a fun, if dark, game.
